Since 2012, the Project has up to 23% Aboriginal employment, including employees and contractors. To date, Indigenous employees have been hired as environmental monitors, geological field assistants, camp attendants, camp cooks, kitchen helpers, labourers, lab technicians and core cutters. The project has provided contract opportunities in construction core box supply, equipment leasing / operating, first aid services, camp catering services and camp security.
New Gold has signed agreements with First Nations in the Project area. To support local hiring, the Blackwater Project has partnered with the BC Aboriginal Mentoring and Training Association, Northwest College and the College of New Caledonia, and has hosted youth participating in the award-winning BladeRunners program. The project is working with regional Aboriginal training institutions and local Aboriginal groups to help prepare Aboriginal peoples for construction and operations jobs.
