POSITION SPECIFICATION:

 

 

 

 

The Director, Sustainability will establish corporate direction and will support New Gold to maintain and grow its leadership position in sustainability (Environment and Social Responsibility, Community Relations and Indigenous Affairs). The role will identify external and internal sustainability trends, recognize risks and opportunities and use insights gained to formulate a competitive business strategy and to integrate sustainability practices within the current business model. In addition, the Director, Sustainability will direct the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of disclosure, community development and social monitoring programs. The Director, Sustainability will ensure that New Gold fulfils its external sustainability reporting commitments and will be responsible for producing New Gold’s annual sustainability report.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

General

  • Work cross functionally with corporate and site ESR teams to ensure company-wide coordination as well as identification and management of environmental and social risks and opportunities
  • Serve as a mentor to ESR staff and provide coaching, development and support in achieving a high level of performance and professional growth
  • Ensure New Gold’s ESR programs and policies create and reinforce a positive community relations atmosphere and promote positive stakeholder relations
  • Ensure that sites are familiar with New Gold’s ESR commitments and obligations to ensure compliance with corporate and regulatory standards
  • Confirm that all significant risks are identified and mitigated at site level and are understood and overseen at a senior management level
  • Report on environmental and social performance through various reports including the annual sustainability report and Towards Sustainable Mining Protocols
  • Implement and maintain corporate standards for ESR management and reporting that are reflective of industry best practices

    Sustainability

  • Liaise with senior management to develop an overall corporate stakeholder strategy
  • Develop and implement a sustainability vision and strategic plan for the company. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure the vision and plan reflect the material issues of all departments
  • Embed corporate responsibility practices into all operations and bring sustainable development considerations to strategic discussions and initiatives
  • Champion organizational continuous improvement activities for sustainable development performance in exploration, development, operations and expansion projects
  • Oversee the governance of closure and reclamation, as well as tailings management
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and guidance to direct and indirect reports. Establish career development and growth objectives for department employees and support relevant training and education initiatives
  • Develop and maintain a detailed knowledge and understanding of sustainability issues that impact New Gold in its operating jurisdictions
  • Regularly update the Board’s Technical & Sustainability Committee on sustainability concerns, activities and progress towards targets
  • Build trusting internal relationships as a central point of contact and expert in sustainability decision-making across functions
  • Build strong trusting relationships with key external stakeholders such as aboriginal groups, community groups, NGOs, policymakers, industry associations, etc.
  • Engage with industry and regulatory groups to effectively influence policy development that has a significant impact on mining in areas relevant to the company
  • Represent the company and maintain active participation in professional organizations that focus on leadership in sustainability

 

 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in CSR roles, including management experience, preferably within the mining sector
  • Bachelor’s degree in social science or related discipline
  • Experience in negotiating and working with governments, regulators, communities and aboriginal groups
  • Strong project management, conflict resolution and negotiation skills
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to travel to visit operating and development sites and host communities on a frequent basis, sometimes on short notice
